CONTINGENT CONTORTIONS | 2017

sound and text  | commissioned by Cafe ArtScience’s “ArtScience Converged” series

Cafe ArtScience commissioned a sound installation for the bathrooms of their restaurant. “Contingent Contortions” considers the intimate conversation between spaces and bodies – how spaces are designed for bodies, anticipating particular ideas of bodies, and ask bodies to bend. Original text was generated considering the question: how do bodies bend, respond and resist? The original text was then regenerated algorithmically as a means of thinking through this choreography, and how it can spur and obscure meaning. Audio of the text was played through speakers mounted below the sinks, and booklets of the text were made available for visitors to read.
