Graphic/instructional score

Envelope operates between the traditions of ready-mades, instructional scores, and mail art. Using a found envelope as both material and metaphor, the work invites participants to create a score that determines fluctuations in frequency and volume, guided by the physical characteristics of the envelope itself.

The work draws attention to the technical meaning of the term “envelope” in sound, where it describes the changing contour of a sonic event over time. By translating a commonplace object into a tool for musical decision-making, Envelope collapses distinctions between everyday communication and sonic composition.
