A Long Breath is an acoustic sound installation comprising of multiple wind harps that generate sound through their resonance with the wind. By transforming invisible and ephemeral environmental forces into audible experiences, the work makes the wind and atmosphere tangible. Originally installed in Congress Square Park in Portland, Maine, the piece invited visitors to engage in attentive listening within the heart of the city.
Created during the depths of the COVID-19 lockdown, A Long Breath offered a space for safe, communal listening at a time when shared public experiences were limited. Its title reflects both the hardship of the pandemic and the collective sense of relief many hoped would follow—a long exhale after a prolonged period of uncertainty. The work draws a parallel between this physiological experience of release and the wind itself, whose movement activates the installation and brings it to life.
